No time to take the glory and relax

March 7, 2007

“Well the waiting’s over and I’m fired up to go racing again. It’s going to be a proud moment lining up with that number one plate on the front of my bike – it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. But really that’s last year’s story and we’ve got to come out of the gate fast and fight to defend this title right from the first session because the competition in MotoGP is so intense. There’s no time to take the glory and relax.

We were quick in some of the tests over the winter and made some good progress with this new bike, though the test here at Qatar didn’t go too smoothly! So I’m going to have to raise my game starting this weekend. Nevertheless, it’s actually a track I quite like and I had a pretty good race here last season. There are a couple of long right-handers that are fun to ride and I really like the sequence of turns one, two and three with the banking.

Question and Answer with Nicky Hayden

March 1, 2007

Question:
How does the reigning world champion feel heading into the first round at Qatar?

I’d love to say ‘hey! I’m so great and everything’s perfect!’ but it’s been a tough off season, recovering from my shoulder operation, but I’m excited to go racing.

Question:
How much has changed since the final race of 2006?

It’s been a big change. I’ve really liked riding the 800 more and more – the more I’ve ridden it the more I’ve liked it – so I’m excited to find out what it’s really about when the lights go out in Qatar.

Question:
Can you tell us about the development and evolution of the new RC212V since the first time you got on the bike?

The bike has changed quite a lot – or not so much really; I think we’re just riding them differently. We’ve now got a better understanding of how to ride them, but we’ll really find out when the racing starts.

Question:
Was the Qatar test the lowest moment for you during the off-season?

Nicky talks about the Jerez test

February 27, 2007

“It was definitely fun to get out there again with the boys with something on the line – the timed session gave it a bit of an edge today and was a little bit of a tease before the first race.

The position is not too bad but my time is quite a long way from the front. I haven’t spent much time on qualifying tyres at the winter tests so it was good to get that time here and put in a few quick laps. Some of the other riders really put in some hot laps today so credit to them.

The conditions towards the end of the session were dodgy because there was a fine mist of rain falling which made it interesting – and riding on qualifiers is always exciting enough anyway. I feel like perhaps we’re still missing a little something to get the speed I want but I’m excited to go racing – I’m really looking forward to it.”
